Florence County Museum Named Best Designed Museum in South Carolina

On August 22, 2018 Architectural Digest published a listing of the best designed museum in every state naming the Florence County Museum as the best designed in South Carolina.

Designed by Watson Tate Savory and Cooper Robertson and Partners, the Florence County Museum opened to the public in October of 2014. The museum is located on the corner of Cheves and Dargan Streets at the intersection of the art, culture and historic districts.

The building design is in response to the historic structures and repetition of historic storefronts. The exterior yellow brick and pattern directly reflects the historic Post Office building on Irby Street and red brick represents the familiar materials found on many of the downtown buildings. The granite foundation and expansive front bench are inspired by materials found on the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center and the Drs. Bruce and Lee Florence County Library.

Construction of the Florence County Museum would not have been possible without the support of the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation, funding from the State of South Carolina and the continued support of Florence County and the Trustees of the Florence Museum.
