North Carolina’s Black Mountain College was an experimental and progressive landmark in American art. Its founders and faculty were among the most memorable men in 20th century art history: Josef Albers, Robert Rauchenberg, Buckminster Fuller, Willem de Kooning, Philip Cage, Merce Cunningham. But what about the women? Using twenty-seven artworks in a broad range of media, including painting, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, this exhibit explores the unhailed role of women artists at Black Mountain, whose own legacies often remain eclipsed by their male contemporaries.
Women Artists of Black Mountain College will open March 6, 2018 in the Special Exhibits Gallery. The exhibition will be on display through July 22, 2018.
