The juror for the Florence Museum’s 2017 Pee Dee Regional Art Competition will be Mr. Sanford Greene. Mr. Greene is a professional comic book artist and native of Kingstree, South Carolina. In addition to his full-time work, Greene is also an artist-in-residence at Benedict College, Columbia, SC, where he conducts workshops for students interested in sequential art and animation.
Greene currently works for Marvel Entertainment on the title Power Man and Iron Fist, whose main character is the basis for the newly launched Netflix original series, Luke Cage. The Luke Cage (Power Man) personality has been a part of the Marvel canon since 1972, but recent fans of Netflix might remember Cage best from the role he played in the 2015 hit show Jessica Jones.
Since beginning work in the comics industry in the late 1990s, Greene has provided ink, pencil and color work for major comic book publishers Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse on an exhaustive and diverse list of titles, including Wonder Girl, Deadpool, Uncanny Avengers, Black Panther, and most recently, Power Man and Iron Fist.
The Luke Cage series is not Greene’s first Netflix-related project. In 2014 the company began to produce a 13-episode animated adaptation of the popular children’s book trilogy An Army of Frogs, which Greene has illustrated since 2013 with author and former NFL linebacker, Trevor Pryce.
Netflix’s Luke Cage series debuted Friday, September 30.
Registration will open for submissions of work to the 2017 Pee Dee Regional Art Competition Tuesday, October 4. Questions about the competition schedule, registration, or prospectus may be directed to Florence County Museum, 843.676.1200.
The Pee Dee Regional has been presented annually by the Florence Museum Board of Trustees since 1954, and is the longest running art competition in the state of South Carolina.
